LAWNS

  • Mow if grass is growing and if dry

  • It is too early to apply general fertiliser except for in very mild areas.    Sulphate of iron can be applied for the control of moss.

 PLANTED BEDS AND POTS

  • Overgrown hedging – this is an ideal time of year to trim back overgrown hedging.

  • Ornamental grasses can be thinned out and dead leaves removed.

  • Bare root deciduous plants can continue to be planted to the end of February.

  • We are still in an ideal period of time for moving overgrown plants.

  • Dividing of overgrown perennials. Their new home should have topsoil well forked over and the addition of well rotted farmyard manure.

  • All overgrown climbers should be cut back heavily. Climbers that are not self adhering should be re-fixed to the wall.

  • All pruning of Roses should be finished immediately.

  • Hand weeding of planted beds and mulching. This will help with the control of weeds.

GREEN HOUSE

  • Time to start sowing seeds for summer flowers

  • If you are growing on the floor of the tunnel, now is the time to dig in well rotted farmyard manure and ground seaweed.

HOUSE PLANTS

  • Allow plants to dry out. Do not overwater.

  • Pot bound plants should be potted on to bigger size pots, with free draining soil mixed with ground seaweed.
